Term 3 & 4 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely break full of festive fun (and some relaxation!) and are ready for the term ahead. Our topic for terms 3 and 4 is Chocolate! We have lots of exciting learning planned for the children and have already made an engaging start with a mysterious golden egg that appeared in the classroom!  We will be looking at the history of chocolate and how chocolate consumption has changed and we will also be finding out where it comes from with a focus on Fair Trade.

In Maths our focus for the first few weeks will be telling the time.  We have made a start and have a collection of watches that the children are taking turns to wear during the day.  If any children have their own watch that they would like to start wearing to school I would encourage them to do so (unless it is a big watch that does more than just tell the time).  We also have a focus on money later this term and a big focus on fractions in term 4.

In Literacy we shall be studying the book “Grendel: A Cautionary Tale about Chocolate” which is a picture book with a lesson.  There are links to various traditional tales that we will be making and we hope to get some good writing from it.  We will also be studying Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by reading the whole book as a class reader and then studying parts of it in more detail during Literacy.  We will continue with our daily reading sessions and our library time on a Tuesday afternoon.

After half term we plan to embark on our DT project for this term.  We will be designing, making and tasting our own chocolate bars.  We will spend some time in Art drawing a wrapper/packaging for this chocolate.  Please do inform me of any food intolerances/allergies that may make this difficult and we will find an alternative for your child.

In P.E. we welcome Mark Potter back for term 3 to  get the children running around and working on their fitness levels and Zara Breeze will return in term 4 to work on gymnastic skills.  The children will also have a session with Mrs Sullivan on a Friday morning where we will be working on gymnastics in term 3 and net games in term 4.  Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit for these lessons.

As always, if there are any problems or concerns with your child, please come in and discuss it with me.

Wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year
The Class 2 Team

As you will have seen in your child’s homework book, there is a new menu for term 5.  I have left the pre-learning Christmas holiday homework in place and added a few more tasks.  After many conversations with parents I have decided to make homework a weekly task, being set on a Wednesday and brought into school on a Monday. Please keep me informed of how you feel this is going.

I would also like the children to try to go on Mathletics once a week and I will be adding activities that I would like them to do.  Mr Boorman informs us that Mathletics is going to change the way it looks at the end of January, so we are excited to see how it will be.

Please don’t forget to keep hearing your child read.  Although we listen to each child once a week, for them to make real progress with reading they need to be doing it every day.  Mrs Clarke is always hoping to fill in a reading certificate for your child when they have finished their reading record.
