Happy New Year and welcome to Term 3 and 4, the Spring Term.
The children have settled into their studies well and have certainly embraced our new topic, Extreme Earth! This predominately Geography and Science based topic, looks at Natural Disasters. It is an exciting topic where we will be learning more about the wider world around us, giving children the chance to gain a better understanding of how people can be affected by their environment.
We will be learning all about the different natural disasters that take place around the world, discussing where they can mostly be found and why they happen. We will also be studying past disasters throughout history.
Spelling: Children will be given a Spice Up Spelling menu with a list of suggested activities which can be completed each week. If you would rather practise spellings in a different way, please feel free to do so. However, it is expected that a piece of spelling work will be brought in on a Monday in their spelling folder to be checked in school. Children also now have a login for the online spelling scheme, the Spelling Shed. If their login has been misplaced, please ask me and I will print a new one.
Literacy: A homework menu will be sent home, listing a variety of tasks for children to complete each week in their homework book.
Maths: This will reflect current classroom learning, giving children the chance to either consolidate or extend their learning. At times this will be set using Mathletics.
Literacy and Maths homework will be set on a Wednesday, and should be handed in on a Monday. This gives them 5 days to complete their activities. If children do not bring homework in, they will spend their lunchtime catching up.
Reading: It is expected that children will read to themselves independently each evening. However, children still need to read with an adult at home at least twice a week. This gives you a chance to ask them questions about their reading, helping them to develop quality reading skills outside of the classroom. Reading records have been sent home, and children will also have a school reading record to note down their thoughts and opinions on their reading.

Working through the year 3 and 4 expectations of the Primary Curriculum. Sentence construction, punctuation and word choice are vitally important. Highlights this term include the study of two stories that fit perfectly for work on natural disasters (Storm and the Mousehole Cat) as well as some work on storm poetry.
Working through the year 3 and 4 expectations of the Primary Curriculum. We have our first stab at fractions and decimals as a class as well as tackling measurements. If parents could keep ‘telling the time’ at the top of the agenda at home, it would be a great help. Plenty of times table practice is also needed at home!
Rocks and Soils - including classifying rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties; describing how fossils are formed; and recognising that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.
Painting skills including colour mixing, adding depth and light and painting in the style of famous artists, including Houkasi’s “The Wave.”
This term, we will be studying important religious events in Judaism.
This term, our Tuesday sessions will be run by Zara Breeze who will be teaching gymnastics. On a Thursday, we will also be enjoying some cricket sessions run by Sussex Cricket.
In PSHE this year we will be following our new ‘Jigsaw’ scheme. This term we will be discussing children’s dreams and goals, and how they can work towards reaching them.
In ICT, we will be learning about how data is stored by computers, including learning about ‘The Cloud’. Following that, we’ll be learning about data logging.
German, recorders and singing will continue to take place each week.
We are always on the lookout for any parents who would be able to come in and give children the chance to do some extra reading or times tables practice.
