Term 1 Newsletter – Class 4

Welcome back to school and the start of an exciting year. It’s great to see everyone back in school and the children so enthusiastic and excited about their learning this term. For the first few weeks, we will be getting the children back up to speed with their learning after such a long time away from school but I’m sure they will all do an excellent job of settling back into it. I’m really excited for what is already looking to be a fantastic year!

History and Geography

Our theme for both of these terms will be the Anglo Saxons.  Beginning with their settlement in Britain and what life was like once the Romans left. Following on from this after half term, we will be looking at Viking invasions finishing with the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Literacy

Before half term, we will be looking at the famous Old English poem, Beowulf, which is an Anglo Saxon story. The children will be looking at various different versions of the story which is going to inspire them to produce some amazing writing. After half term, we will be focusing on the text ‘Viking Boy’. This is a great story which links in nicely with our theme as it looks at different aspects of Viking life and culture. We will also be doing handwriting practice and encouraging everyone to earn back their pen licences.

Spelling

During these terms we will be using the No-Nonsense Spelling programme which covers the grammar and spelling objectives for year 4 and 5. We will do this by Mrs Vance, our class TA, leading the year 4 spelling session and the year 5 children from both classes coming together with me focusing on their year 5 objectives.

Numeracy

We will start the year by learning about place value and number which are the building blocks of maths. We will then move onto looking at fractions and decimals. After half term we will be looking at calculating with the four operations.

Science

We will begin by studying sound before moving onto electrical circuits after half term.

Art

Before half term we will be working on our drawing skills, with a particular focus on Leonardo Da Vinci. After half term, we will be working with textiles

RE

This term we will be considering the questions, ‘What does it mean if God is holy and loving?’ and ‘Was Jesus the Messiah?’ In RE we use the big question approach to organise our learning.

PE

We will be having our regular PE lessons with All Star Soccer, learning about invasion games, such as football. We will also be working on striking and fielding in our other PE lessons. PE sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays. Full PE kit is expected.

PSHE

In the first term we will be looking at the topic of relationships. After half term our topic will be ‘Celebrating differences’. These lessons will be taught using the Jigsaw scheme of work.

Computing

We will be starting off by learning how to save and locate files on the system and looking at Microsoft Word and then we will move onto learning about the history of computers.

DT

This term we will be looking at how levers work and what they can be used for.

Homework

  1. Each term a spelling list made up of the statutory words for year 4 and 5 will be sent home. These will be worked on every Friday using dictation sentences.
  2. Reading is required every night which is to be shown in their reading records. We are also encouraging the children to read a variety of books that will challenge them; these can be from school or from home.
  3. On Thursdays, the children will be sent home with a homework menu for the term. Each week the children will select one task to complete. This is to be handed back in on a Tuesday. This homework will be completed in their home learning books.
  4. Mathletics work will also be set every week on the same days as stated above.

Let’s make this a great term!
