Welcome to our final term of another rather peculiar year! It has been great to have the children back in school, and they have all been doing an exceptional job at getting back on with things, and completing assessments. Term 5 and 6 are normally busy terms, but we sadly already know that some of our favourite activities won’t be taking place. With the current government guidelines, we still hope that things will return to some sense of normality at the end of June, and that we will be able to still hold some of the events at the end of the year!
This term we will study ‘Ancient Greece’. We will be starting off by looking at the geography of Greece, including its climate and topography, as this has had a huge impact on the way the Greek civilization developed, as well as on Greek myths and stories. Then, we will be focussing more on history, looking at the states of Athens and Sparta, and some of the famous battles that took place during the Ancient Greek period.
We have started our work this term by looking at the classic tale of The Odyssey, one of the great ancient stories. By the end of the term, we hope children will have written their own (slightly shorter) version of the Odyssey. After half term, we will look at some more examples of myths and legends, while also studying some non-fiction texts about Greece.
This term, we will be finishing our work on statistics. The Year 6s then have some specific objectives to cover that don’t appear in the Year 5 curriculum, such as ratio and algebra. The Year 5s will be consolidating their learning in other areas, such as fractions, decimals and percentages. We then have more work to do on converting measures, as well as looking at position and direction.
In art we will be looking at the concept of sculpture, with a focus on both classical and modern sculpture.
In PE this term, we are learning how to play stoolball on Mondays, while developing our athletics skills with All Star Soccer on Tuesdays. After half term, the Year 6s will be doing swimming with myself and swimming coach Miss Zara, while the Year 5s stay at school with Mr Sullivan to continue learning about stoolball.
We will start by looking at variables in programming. We will also be continuing to work on our skills in Power Point and typing.
There is a spelling session each day Tuesday – Friday. Children will also be given a list of words each term from their year group’s statutory spelling list. These lists will be need to be learned over the whole term, and we will be doing dictation sentences using the words each Friday. Each term’s list will be added to the class page on the school website.
Our main theme over the term is Earth and Space. We will start by looking at concepts such as the seasons, and night and day, before moving on to the Space Race after half term.
This term, we will be considering the questions, ‘Why, where and how do Hindus worship?’ and ‘How can a Mosque help us to understand the Muslim faith?
In term 5, we will be looking at the theme of ‘Relationships’. After half term, we will look at RSE (Relationships and sex education). These lessons are taught using the Jigsaw scheme of work. For more information, please speak to Mrs Sullivan, our PSHE and RSE subject leader.
After half term, we will be using electrical components to make a working alarm for a museum display.
Before half term, we will be learning about vocabulary to do with shopping. After half term, we will look at words to do with travel.
Homework will be set each week on a Wednesday. A homework menu will be given out which will feature mainly reading and writing tasks. Mathletics tasks will also be set.
Don’t forget, you can do some extra work at home on Mathletics and Times Table Rock Stars, and make sure you keep reading – Reading records have been given out, and we are keen for children to earn some certificates! We also have mental maths books available for personal study and self-marking at home. Please let me know if your child would like to have one at home.
