Term 5 & 6 Newsletter – Class 5

British Empire

Welcome back to our final terms of the year. We have so much to fit in this term, including the return of the French trip for year 6, sports day, and of course the end of year school production.

For the next two weeks, I will be out of school on paternity leave. Mr Sullivan will be taking the Year 6s in the mornings, with Mrs Riley teaching the Year 5s. In the afternoons, Mr Sullivan will be teaching the whole class together. I willbe back on the first day of the SATs test week, Monday 9th May.

With so much to look forward to, I’m sure we will have a great end to the school year together.

Mr Boorman

Our main theme this term is the British Empire. We will be finding out about the origins of the empire, where the empire reached, and the goods that were brought back to Britain from the different parts. We will also consider the effect that the Empire had on the countries under British rule, both positive and negative. After half term, we will start to look in more detail at the Atlantic slave trade.

In the first part of the term, Year 5 children will be learning about poetry with Mrs Riley while the Year 6s revise for the SATs tests. After the SATs tests, we will be reading the book ‘Freedom’ by Catherine Johnson, about a boy’s experience as a slave in the Atlantic slave trade. In whole class reading, we will be reading an abridged version of ‘Hamlet’ by William Shakespeare. We will also be focusing a lot on our speaking and listening skills as part of the end of year production.

We will be learning about the geography of the British Empire, in terms of countries and continents as well as how the climate affected the goods produced in different areas.

In DT, we will be learning about mechanisms, specifically to do with linkages.

In PE, children will be working with All Star Soccer on their athletics skills. They will also be working with staff from Sussex Cricket once a week. In term 6, Year 6 children will be taking part in swimming sessions at Cross in Hand School.

This term, we will be using Scratch to create and programme different animation sequences, as well as working on skills in Power Point.

There is a spelling session each day Tuesday - Friday, where children in Key Stage 2 are split into their year groups in order to cover the year group objectives. Children will also be given a list of words each term from their year group’s statutory spelling list. These lists will be need to be learned over the whole term, and we will be doing dictation sentences using the words each Friday. Each term’s list will be added to the class page on the school website.

Over this term, we will be looking at concepts including measures, shape and space (including geometry and position and direction), and statistics, while also revising topics such as fractions and percentages.

In science we will be learning about evolution, adaptation and inheritance in plants and animals.

Our main focus in art is on collage this term.

Our two questions this term are: ‘What kind of King was Jesus?’ and ‘Who is Mohammed and what do Muslims learn from him?’

Our two PSHE topics this term are ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me (including SRE – Sex and Relationships Education)’.

Homework will be set each week on a Wednesday. A homework menu will be given out which will feature mainly reading and writing tasks. Maths tasks will also be set, either on paper or on Mathletics. Homework is handed in the following Monday.

During SATs revision weeks, Year 6 children will be set homework separately based on their revision sessions in class. This will take the form of pages from their revision books or test papers from their packs.

Don’t forget, you can do some extra work at home on Mathletics and Times Table Rock Stars, and make sure you keep reading – Reading records have been given out, and we are keen for children to earn some certificates! Children can bring their books from school home to read, and they can bring books from home into school.
